Recently San Diego Magazine featured the San Diego Council on Literacy’s A WAY WITH WORDS. They hosted the Chairman’s Circle reception at the James C. Copley Library in La Jolla, raising an estimated $142,000 for its countywide literacy efforts. More than 80 supporters attended, including Don Cowan, Board Chair of Community Catalysts of California. Don has been on our board since 2002. Professionally he is, Director of Communications for PETCO Inc. As Community Catalysts of California’s Board Chair, Don has provided dynamic leadership, which is only outdone by his dedication to our cause. The board of directors are volunteers charged with maintaining organizational oversight and stewardship of our mission. This is a weighty responsibility that they have diligently carried out. The board is inspired by the quality of work that all staff do on a daily basis and this only motivates them further to keep Community Catalysts of California a leading organization helping people living with disabilities. On February 17, 2006 consumers met at the Hometown Buffet for lunch. In addition CAC talked about future events/ fundraisers. After lunch consumers and coaches went to Northridge Cinema to watch the Pink Panther movie. Christina Gonzales and Roxana Jimenez attended the Conference in Modesto and would like to thank Wendy Forkas for making the conference full of color, fun and informative. Longview Ukiah Paul R., Shannon S., Darryl C., Erik L., David S., Jess G., and Randy D. are taking college classes. Albert P. and Marie G. enjoyed a wonderful night out celebrating Valentines Day with dinner at The Broiler- Steak House! Our safety raffle prize winner this month was Jose Landero, who won a gift card to Schat's (bakery). JoAnn has been getting around on crutches lately, because of a bad knee. Her Grandma is here helping her out for awhile. We all wish you a fast and speedy recovery! Paige and Tanya would like to thank the Longview staff for doing such a great job and helping to make sure we had a great annual inspection in February. Thanks again Longview team! Longview staff and consumers had a great time with supported living at a Valentine’s party. Thank you for making us a part of a great time! Santa Clara On February 10th, Santa Clara office had their staff meeting. Staff also brought in desserts to celebrate Valentine's Day and there were a lot of sweet treats to indulge! Moreover, Oliver, from State Fund, conducted an in house training for them. He went over issues of Worker's Compensation and other state benefits. Finally, they would like to congratulate Winston for being the safety winner. He won a gift card from 7-Eleven. Follow up on the Valentine's fundraiser that began January 23, 2006- They were able to raise $266.76. A big thank you to everyone who participated in this event and made it a success! Coalinga The Coalinga office has been very busy this month. Throughout the month the consumers have had a Valentine’s pizza party, they participated in the Valentine’s dance and had two monthly birthdays. The first birthday was for consumer Daniela G., for which we had cake and ice cream at the program. The second birthday was for Richard C., for which we had a luncheon party at Perko’s. Consumers also participated in trips to the mall, weekly visits to K-Mart, the library, and park. El Centro Luz, ILS Skills Coach is back working with us from the beginning of the month after being off for a period of time . Welcome back Luz! The Imperial Valley office is excited as pretty soon they will have an accessible van for consumers. The van will be accessible for the unit and be delivered anytime this month. everyone was invited to stop by and share. Case Manager Luz Olmos was given a 5 year certificate of recognition and pin on January 30, 2006 with a luncheon at the new Johnny Carino’s Italian restaurant in El Centro. The Imperial Valley unit planned to have a Valentine’s Day staff potluck on February 10, 2006. Primary dish will be a seafood casserole and Merced Our winner for the Incentive Safety Program was Annabell Saldana. Our consumers attended a Valentine's dance and had a great time. It was held at the Elke's Lodge. They rocked the night away. Coaches During the month of were very sore the next day, due to all the dancing they did. February, the Coalinga office also participated in their Shelley Cook's husband (Bob) had a birthday this month and they annual Valentine’s Day celebrated at the Pine Cone Mongolian Grill. He is forty years young. Balloon Bouquet Sale. This fundraiser was a huge success and we were able to deposit approximately $1,000 dollars into our trust account. This money is used toward our annual trip. Sylvia Ortiz's (Office Assistant) niece got married on February 18th. Congratulations Junior and Serena! Congratulations to Laura Johnson from Fresno, who won the Valentine's Basket! Fresno Welcome to our new coaches: Tonisha Yancey, Yolanda Bell-Moore, Kristi Carter, & Yer Vang. OurProgram Leader Maria Savageau won a trip on Kiss FM. Her and her husband get a convertible to drive up the coast to Wine Country. A nice hotel, food, and even spending money! How exciting! Our Polar Bear plunge went well. Staff and consumers are fine, even though one consumer turned bright red. He is fine too. We also earned money for our consumers through a cookie fund raiser. Our Special Olympics basketball team won their first tournament. Way to go guys! Congratulations to coach Stephanie Morgan who was promoted to Recreation Coordinator! Modesto Modesto S.L. Personnel Attendant, Coach, Kym Baker (with hubby), and Office Jaime Rodriguez is officially "off the Manager, Carole Uhlenhop (with family) spent market", as he flew off to Mexico to several days enjoying the warmer climate, South marry his long-time girlfriend on of the Border. Jaime, Kym, and Carole were all February 16, 2006. The Modesto gang actually in Mexico at the same time during one surprised Jaime on February 3, 2006 weekend, and didn't even know it! with a "Congratulation Send Off" at the Modesto office. Jaime arrived for a scheduled "Safety Meeting", and was Marisa E., Modesto S.L. consumer, celebrated greeted warmly by Modesto's employee's who wanted to wish her birthday with a big party at Mountain him well before he took the big "plunge". Jaime was caught off Mike's Pizza on Feb. 20th. All of Modesto guard, but was a very appreciative "man of the hour". Congratulations, Jaime!! Congratulations to Darren Monteith, Modesto Skills Coach, and Mexico seems to be the "IN" place these days for a lot of February's Star of the Month! Modesto staff. In the past few months, five of the MDO crew have spent some vacation or honeymoon time in some area of Mexico. Just in February alone, in addition to Jaime, both Skills Star of the Month-February 2006 DARREN MONTEITH C ommunity Catalysts of California was excited to announce that Darren Monteith of the Modesto office was selected as the Star of the Month for February 2006. Darren has been with Community Catalysts of California for nine years this June. Through the years of changes, he has held several different positions in our Modesto SL program. Darren has grown tremendously in his skills coach position in the last year. He has continued to demonstrate unconditional sup-port for a particular consumer, always being patient and reliable regardless of several challenging incidents with this consumer. In the last month, Darren has also taken on an additional assignment for our TRIPS program. He dis-plays certain qualities that are genuine strengths to our Modesto program- his dependability and flexibility are exceptional. Darren has demonstrated his commitment to providing the highest quality of services to our consumers and he is truly a shinning star. Congratulations, Darren! Consumer of the Month-March 2006 AIMEE MAYLIN C ommunity Catalysts of California is proud to announce that Aimee Maylin is our Consumer of the Month for March 2006. Aimee has been with Community Catalysts of California for six years. She is currently attending West Hills college where she is taking reading and math to improve her education. She is also very helpful and will perform any duties that are given to her. She is very easy-going. Aimee gets along with everyone and does her best to make everyone happy. Aimee enjoys participating in aerobics at the gym and playing the slot machines at the casino’s. In her free time Aimee likes to travel.
