Community Catalysts, hosted the annual Catalyst of the Year dinner on Thursday, October 11 at the Silver Gate Yacht Club on Shelter Island. Created in 2002, the annual award recognizes an individual, organization or community group that best represents the positive changes each of us can make in the lives of individuals with disabilities. This year’s recipient is San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation’s Injured Servicemembers Program, which introduces adaptive sports and recreation activities to service members who have sustained a life changing injury while defending our country. For the second year in a row, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders kicked off the celebration as the featured speaker. “I commend Community Catalysts for their outstanding contributions to our city, for their work to increase access, opportunity and affordable housing for the disabled community,” said Mayor Sanders. During the awards ceremony, Mayor Sanders issued a City Proclamation identifying October 11th as ‘Injured Servicemembers Program Day’ in the City of San Diego, “We in San Diego understand all too well the commitment and sacrifice that our armed forces make during a time of war. For the brave men and women who have sustained injuries while serving our country, the Injured Servicemembers Program provides understanding, empathy and a valuable support system,” concluded Mayor Sanders. The Injured Servicemembers Program partners with the Balboa Naval Medical Center San Diego, Cal Diego PVA, Disabled Sports USA, the Wounded Warrior Program and the US Paralympics and is administered through the San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation. The program is designed for individuals with permanent physical disabilities and provides the next step in renewing their quality of life. This year’s participants have enjoyed snow ski trips, golf, outrigger canoe, deep sea fishing, handcycling, kayaking and wheelchair basketball. Honored guest San Diego Supervisor Greg Cox presented a County Proclamation to the Injured Servicemembers Program in appreciation for the good work the program does for our military throughout San Diego. He also presented a check to Community Catalysts from his office to help underwrite the awards dinner. The County of San Diego, through the offices of Supervisor Cox and Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, was a title sponsor for the evening. Jim Jenkins, CEO, acted as emcee for the evening and presented the Catalyst of the Year to program. “San Diego is blessed in many ways: our weather, our beaches and mountains, our diverse and giving people. Most of all we are blessed with our freedom - but it is not without a cost. Tonight, we honor the San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation and its Injured Service Members Program. This program provides sports activities for those individuals who have given so much to defend our freedoms and we thank them for their efforts,” said Jim Jenkins. Numerous representatives from the San Diego Adapted Sports Foundation attended including their Executive Director Marla Knox, Board President Ross Ehrhardt, and Board Vice President Al Kovach who accepted the Catalyst of the Year award on behalf of the organization. Past recipients of the award have included the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club which supports disabled recreation programs through their annual La Jolla Festival of the Arts fundraiser, La Jolla Playhouse for their ACCESS Performance Series, Scripps Mercy Hospital for their A-Visions pre-vocational training program, Challenged America which provides sailing education and rehabilitation programs, and Silver Gate Yacht Club which hosts the annual Wheelchair Regatta. Sponsors for the evening’s event included the County of San Diego, SDG&E, Qualcomm, Silver Gate Yacht Club, The Tom Hom Group, Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP, Scripps Mercy Hospital, San Diego Downtown Partnership, Challenged AmericaTM, Hornblower Cruises, Public Policy Strategies, Inc., Petco, Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club, San Diego Junior Theater, Pechanga Resort & Casino, Midway Magic, A Floral Event, Rainwater’s Restaurant and Edelweiss Bakery.
